How to Renew Your RBT Certification in 2026

If your RBT certification is expiring in 2026, you still recertify with a Recertification Competency Assessment. After that, the system shifts. Your next recertification date becomes two years later, and the long-term requirement becomes 12 professional development units (PDUs) instead of another competency assessment.

Whether you’re renewing your RBT certification for the first time or you’ve done this before, staying on top of the latest changes will help you avoid delays and keep your credentials active.

How RBT Renewal Works

Renewing your RBT certification is more than just a formality—it’s a way to show your commitment to high-quality ABA services and ensure you’re up to date with professional standards. The BACB requires RBTs to renew their certification every year, proving they’re still competent, ethical, and actively supervised.

While the core requirements haven’t changed, the application process has been updated to be more streamlined. Here’s what you need to know.

What changed for RBTs starting in 2026

1) Recertification moves toward a 2-year cycle

For current RBTs recertifying in 2026, the BACB notes your next recertification date will be 2 years from your 2026 recertification date.

2) PDUs become the long-term maintenance requirement

Starting after you certify or recertify in 2026, you can begin earning PDUs toward the new 2-year cycle. The requirement is 12 hours of PDUs during that cycle.

3) What does  not change: supervision expectations

RBT supervision remains a minimum of 5% of service hours per month, and the BACB specifies it includes two face-to-face contacts, with at least one being an individual meeting.

Key Updates to the RBT Renewal Process

The biggest changes to the RBT certification process mostly impact new applicants, but it’s still important for current RBTs to be aware of them. Some of these updates might affect how you submit your renewal application or coordinate with your employer.

1. Easier, More Streamlined Application Process

In the past, the RBT application process involved multiple steps and approvals. Now, it’s been simplified into a single-session application, which means less paperwork and faster processing.

2. New Attestation Form Requirement

A BCBA or BCaBA now needs to complete an Attestation Form verifying that you meet the BACB’s eligibility requirements. This form must be uploaded as part of your renewal application.

3. Supervision Must Be Verified Before You Start Working

Even after you pass the RBT exam, your certification will remain inactive until a BCBA supervisor officially adds you as a supervisee in their BACB account. This ensures that all RBTs have the proper supervision before providing services.

Step-by-Step Guide to Renewing Your RBT Certification

Even with these updates, the renewal process itself remains largely the same. Here’s what you need to do:

1. Complete the Renewal Competency Assessment

  • Within 45 days of your renewal date, complete the RBT Renewal Competency Assessment with a qualified assessor.
  • This assessment checks your skills and knowledge in essential RBT tasks.
  • Your assessor must document the results using the official BACB form.

2. Make Sure You Have the Right Supervision Hours

  • You need to show proof that you’ve received the required supervision hours throughout the year.
  • Keeping detailed supervision records is important in case of an audit.

3. Submit the Renewal Application and Pay the Fee

  • Log in to your BACB account to access the RBT Renewal Application.
  • Double-check that all your information is correct before submitting.
  • The renewal fee is $35 and must be paid when you submit your application.

4. Wait for BACB Confirmation

  • The BACB processes renewal applications in the order they’re received.
  • To avoid delays, submit your renewal well before your certification expiration date.

Tips for a Smooth RBT Renewal

Renewing your RBT certification doesn’t have to be stressful. Here are some tips to make the process easier:

  • Start early: Begin the renewal process at least six weeks before your certification expires to avoid any last-minute issues.
  • Stay informed: The BACB frequently updates its policies, so check their website regularly to make sure you’re following the latest guidelines.
  • Keep communication open: If you work for an ABA provider, let your supervisor or HR department know about any paperwork you need from them to prevent delays.

If you miss your recertification date (don’t guess, follow the rule)

If you fail to meet recertification requirements before your certification expires:

  • Your certification becomes inactive
  • You have 30 days from the expiration date to reinstate by submitting an approvable application and paying a late fee
  • You are not permitted to practice, bill, or represent yourself as an RBT while inactive

What to do after you recertify in 2026 (so you are ready for the 2-year cycle)

Here’s the clean way to think about it:

  1. Recertify in 2026 with the competency assessment (final stretch of the old pattern).
  2. Start logging PDUs for your next recertification window. You can start earning PDUs after you certify or recertify in 2026.
  3. Aim for 12 PDUs total across the 2-year cycle.

How PDUs can be earned

The BACB’s transition guidance lists three options:

  • In-service training at your workplace
  • ACE Provider events

University coursework (behavior-analytic coursework with a passing grade)

Conclusion

Renewing your RBT certification each year is a key part of staying in the field and continuing to make a difference in the lives of individuals with autism.

The latest updates from the BACB are designed to make the process more efficient, but it’s still important to stay proactive, keep up with deadlines, and communicate with your supervisor.
